Are super fast data speeds overrated?

Yes, what is the point of super fast speeds when you are capped monthly and charged ridiculous overages? Its like taking a big gulp straw and using it on a 4 oz. soda. I'd rather have a regular straw with unlimited soda. Just my opinion.

That's...a really good analogy O.o

I'm taking the big gulp straw and putting it in the unlimited soda.

Problem? :p

None if you can get away with it. I heard somewhere that verizon cut grandfathered accounts off from unlimited data.

Sorta true. They cut off grandfathered unlimited data users from getting a discount on phones when they renew unless they switch to a tiered data plan. Which sucks too btw.

So you would have to pay the non contract price for a phone?

I just sold my Bionic today to a guy who was using an OG Droid. I was with him when he activated it in the store, and he kept his unlimited data plan - at least according to the receipt he got.

Actually, these customers aren't renewing, they're just continuing month-to-month, or continuing their current contract until it expires. This is what bothers me about the whole thing, especially for people who are already out of contract - they're foregoing a device subsidy in exchange for being allowed to continue with their current plan. But since they're out of contract, Verizon is under no obligation to continue offering them that same plan. If Verizon changes their policies and forces you to move to a currently offered plan, you can either stay, or leave with your shiny new phone (that you paid full retail for, possibly very recently) knowing that won't work on any other network.

And for me, fast data speeds are overrated. When I was a Verizon customer and got LTE in my area, I started streaming TV episodes from my home server - something that wouldn't work for me over 3G. Do I need to do this? No. And for everything else I did on Verizon, 3G speeds were just fine.

The only way these super fast speeds are worth it is if you're not getting throttled or paying overage fees.

2 gigs are usually enough for me... I have wifi at home and viewing only static pages + facebook, twitter, instagram only brings me to around 1 gig per month
