Are there such apps ...

That genuinely do help battery performance or close down unwanted apps in the background that drain battery?

Now you see them advertised all of the time, and I've tried a few but you can't really tell if there's any improvement. Do any of them actually work?

Nope, harmful snake-oil, and many of them their real purpose is to phone home your personal and/or private data to China, sell it to third-parties and to show you ads, and that's why they're "free". And why you might see them advertised so often, is because companies like Cheetah Mobile and Qihoo 360 have huge advertising budgets, because they want to be on as many phones and tablets as they can.

Lovely, I thought as much! Are there any guides on here (or tips) for battery saving? Since the last update it's ridiculous.

The first thing I do is disable any and all apps I don't/won't use. Then I go through and turn off any OS features I don't use or require. Obviously these will be different for each user. I'm not not suggesting you completely dumb down your phone, just identify stuff you don't need and turn it off. This is a good starting point for battery optimization.

I also keep an eye on what's using my battery through the built in app in Marshmallow. It has alerted me to a misbehaving app (Google Play Services) which was having trouble syncing my contacts and consequently chewing up the battery.

This won't cure everything but as I said it should be a good starting point.

Yeah I haven't really looked at that new app yet, certainly something I'll be looking into. Surely they're looking to patch Marshmellow sooner rather than later?

I don't know what update you are referencing.

Here is what I do ...

For a minor update a Wipe Cache Partition right after the update to remove temporary data from the cache. It only removes temporary data.

For a major update like Lollipop to Marshmallow a Factory Data Reset right after the update. It removes permanent data, temporary data, added apps, and settings.

A contaminated cache partition can really slow down a device and increase battery usage.

Ever since the Marshmallow update my battery has been considerably worse, definitely noticeable.

How would I go about a Wipe Cache Partition? (Do apologise, I'm relatively new to Android)

My battery life improved by doing a hard reset after the Marshmallow update. To be fair, it wasn't terrible after the update just not as good as it was on Lollipop. A few days after the reset things were running well and battery life improved. I also cleared the cache partition before I reset the phone.

What do you mean by "hard reset"? If it was a Factory Data Reset, one of the parts of that process is to do a Wipe Cache Partition.

With the phone powered OFF, press and hold the volume UP, home and power keys simultaneously until you see the splash screen. It should then boot into recovery mode. From there you use the volume up and volume down keys to navigate the menu and the power key to select the option. You want 'wipe cache partition'. It should only take a few seconds and then reboot.

As Thom recommended, if it was a major version upgrade, a factory reset would be advisable.

What I meant that I had done a "Wipe Cache Partition" and that didn't fix the minor issue I was having so I decided to do a Factory Reset. Sorry if what I wrote was confusing.

Thanks. There are a couple of different things that "hard reset" could mean.

I always do a Wipe Cache Partition after a minor update and a Factory Data Reset after a major update.
