Are you any of you guys taking the update? I am, I know it will lock the boot loader but at least well have root and I can live with a stock ROM and root, because you still set the CPU and debloat anything and also backup apps and lots more, so where do you stand? Are you gonna wait?

I'm taking the update!!!! I had the leak and loved it, now I am back to stock awaiting the update.

With ICS you can disable system apps (debloat) without root.

Since this phone doesn't tether there really isn't any other reason to want root - so yes the Spec my girl is using will get the OTA once its around

After talking to the dev's I want no part of it, or at least until something is figured out to work around locked bootloader. Maybe I'm just being lazy but I dont want to try to return to GB in order to flash CM or AOKP once they get data fixed. I'm sure they are gonna get a work around going, but until then ICS leak will do. By the way great jobs dev's cause I know you guys are working on it!

You sure about that? It wasn't possible on my tablet with ICS on it.

I'll take the ota if I'm able to use the lg tool to restore an older cab if I don't like it.

Isnt the verizon s3 have a locked bootloader? I believe someone got it unlocked too. And it had some roms with the locked bootloader.

What do you mean the spectrum doesnt tether? I've used it for tethering since I've had it. So does my cousin.

I've been on the road all day today and just got home after driving well over 400 miles today, I havent had a chance to read all I missed today but I take it no one has received the update....?

Thats what i thought to start with but i honestly like the leak better than aokp on this phone. I love the speed of aokp but im on stock and constantly checking for this update i dont mind downgrading if i have to. Had to do the same thing with my fascinate. Cm based roms on it are mtd and stock was bml
plus our devs have done so much work with the spec im sure once the update spreads into the wild they can get the bootloader unlocked

Wonder if they are going like htc with some sort of s-on s-off type security that we will also have to get around

It works on the leak. They still show up in the apps manager with a note showing Disabled, which kinda annoys me, but they do not show up in the app drawer anymore. Seems to work well.

Cool, just noticed it shows up as disabled in the play store too, and takes it off the update list

That's odd. I've never seen the ability to disable apps in stock in ics... Kinda seems like something that defeats the purpose of adding all that bloatware.

I guess its like rocketlauncher and the ics animation when you click on android version a few times nice additions that arent easily found. Unless someone tells you about it

You can on stock ICS with:
VZW Droid Razr
VZW Gal Nexus
Nexus 7
Transformer 101
SPRNT Galaxy S3
SPRNT Gal Nexus
VZW Droid 4

Which is every device I have disabled system apps for myself or someone I know. These are also ALL the devices I have messed with that had stock ICS. I dont see why the Spec would be the only one you cant

I tether all day. did it before root, do it with root.

Of course, different strokes for different folks - I have 2 other devices that tether - so the spec doesn't need to. My dad however lives in the boondocks and uses tether as his primary source of internet - he has to have it, so I put CM on all his phones and make sure I suggest one for him that is easily modified.

Everyone seems to be quoting my post with the "I NEED ROOT" or "I NEED TETHER" response. This is a personal decision, everyone I imagine will have a different one.

Can someone clarify what exactly the bootloader being locked affects? I understand you can still root, but no CWM, and I've seen comments about no more flashing ROMs, but then I've also seen some about just the kernel being locked but the rest of the ROM could be "modified"...? Would appreciate just a basic explanation of how the locked bootloader will affect future development.

Side note: would like to say a huge thank you to all the developers! I know you put many, many hours into your work and I know the many "uninformed" questions can get very frustrating, but those of is who do follow instructions and benefit daily from your work do really appreciate it!

Simply, a locked bootloader means you can't flash roms like cyanogenmod. You need a bootstrapper like the Motorola devices use to bypass the lock on the boot image.
