Are you impressed with the new update?

It seems like not too much has changed. For some reason I thought there was going to be more visual enhancements. (ex. new lock screen, etc.) Is this because the HTC sense wasn't updated to 3.0 I also thought there was a newer version of the keyboard with 2.3 idk any thoughts?

i'm just impressed that AT&T even gave us the update. lol

but it is just a "point" upgrade. or so i've heard (2.2->2.3). so that usually means just a few tweaks here and there. the refined UI looks nice though.

I wasn't expecting an update, and I can see some things that have changed, such as icons, the app menu, what update was that? I just got it today, I don't know if it's super late or just came out.. (it said HTC update) I was just curious on what all changed and what update it was so I can look it up. :) thanks.

It was the gingerbread update so now instead of your phone running froyo 2.2, you should have gingerbread 2.3 as your OS. You can do menu-settings-about phone-software to double check what it says there.

awesome, it says 2.3.3
thanks! I have no idea what all that means, I guess I will check out the gingerbread thread. haha

Very impressed by how long my battery lasts now. I used to get about 1/2 a day out of it before recharging. Now it's good for the whole day & if I forget to plug it in at night, it still has 1/2 charge!! Much better!!

Battery is for sure better, yesterday and today I've had no time to play games or mess with anything on my phone at work, just about 3 * ~2 minute calls each day, maybe 6 texts, deleting from gmail a few times and yesterday and today I've had about 85% battery when I got home. unplugged 0700-1730.

Yes the bigger visual differences, lockscreen, and the new htc keyboard come with sense 3.0. About the only actual gingerbread OS difference us the endusers would notice is the redesigned battery usage screen. The new app drawer, quicksettings in the notify bar, that was all htc.

Battery is definitely better. That alone may keep me from trading in my Inspire early. I do like the new home screen toggles, etc.

ever since i did update when i receive an incoming txt message from ANYONE that i have saved in my people address book, I no longer get their name to showup on incoming txt ONLY their phone number.
just started after upgrade i noticed all incoming txt have a 1 infront of their 10 digit number?

I never saved contacts using a 1 so thought that might be it so I added a 1 infront of all my contacts numbers but still no name shows up.

Thanks for any help

This seems to be a common issue for a lot of people since upgrading. There are a few suggestions floating around how to fix it but they've been pretty hit & miss. I experimented with a couple of things and the problem seems to have gone away for me, but I only text with a few people so I can't say if it's working across the board. And I'm not sure exactly which of the things I tried fixed the problem. But this is what I did.

First I stopped syncing Facebook with my contacts. I went to Accounts & Sync> Facebook and removed the account. Then went into the FB app and logged in. When it asked if I want to sync with contacts, I selected "Don't sync with contacts". Went back into Accounts & Sync and made sure that Sync with contacts remained unchecked. My FB friends are no longer linked to my contacts but in the couple of weeks that I've been using my phone, I didn't really see much of a benefit in that. If I want to see my friends' FB updates, I'll go into FB.

Then I cleaned up my contacts in Gmail. I exported my entire contact list to a .cvs file. Opened that in Excel and standardized all the data as much as I could. I made sure everything was in the proper column. I removed any extraneous data that I didn't need. I made sure all the phone numbers were in the same format. I used "(xxx) xxx-xxxx" but I don't know how much that really matters. I made sure each component of the address is in a separate column (street, city, st, zip). Once I felt everything was consistent, I went back into Gmail and deleted all the contacts. I sync'd my phone so all the contacts were removed from there as well. Went back into Gmail and imported all the contacts back and sync'd again....Obviously this is quite a bit of work and I'm not sure how much it really helped. But it's what I did and the problems seems to have gone away. YMMV.

After all of this I was still having a problem with one contact in particular. His name and picture would resolve w/in the messages but in the All Messages page his picture wouldn't show up. It was just a grey square, not even the generic silhouette picture. When I tapped on that square I wouldn't even get the "Call, View, Message, Mail" menu like I did on the other contacts. I ended up deleting that contact completely from my phone and from Gmail contacts. I sync'd to make sure it was gone and then manually created his contact again on the phone. After all of this, the messaging app now seems to be resolving the contact name and picture properly every time.

There are still other issues people are reporting with the stock messaging app since the GB update. I've actually switched to using Handcent as my default messaging app and haven't had any problems with it. If you don't want to try the things I did or if they don't work for you, you may just want to consider using a 3rd party app for your messaging.

I like the new update. The only two cons I ran into are the messaging and my music folder. Before the update I had about 15 complete CDs in there separate folders but with the new update I have the same 15 CDs scattered all over the place, when I plug my phone using Disk Drive and go to my music folder it shows I have each CD in its separate folder but when I pull up my player on my phone I have a folder for each song of the same artist. I have even gone to the Properties, Summary, Advance and all values are the same for each artist. Has anyone ran into this problem or know how to fix it.

Can you sideload apps (i.e. Amazon Marketplace) because that's the main reason I'm using a custom ROM currently.

I just did the update amd am regretting it. I can no longer use WiFi hot spot. it keeps telling me I need to contact att/wireless or dial 611. Also having the message/ contact problem where it doesn't display persons name, just the number....

Any one else experience these??? I would like to fix my WiFi..!

I have that problem where if someone texts me it just shoes their number...and when I press the unlock button it takes like 5 seconds for the screen to come on..it gets pretty annoying

Well, can you blame them for patching a loophole that people had been exploiting? It's not like you were paying for it before, and if you were, complain to ATT.

Yes, you can sideload. Go to Amazon and look at the directions. Basically, go to settings, applications, then check mark the "unknown sources" box. Go to Amazon and follow the directions and enter in your phone number. You'll get a SMS and go from there. No problems for me after that.

I am quite pleased. My phone seems to work more smoothly and better battery life than before so far.

I've been able to sideload apps since the end of June. That was an automatic update from AT&T. But it may come with the upgrade if you haven't gotten the update for sideloading from at&t.

I am enjoying the new update. Phone performance is a bit better and the better battery life is worth the upgrade. I haven't had any of the problems mentioned here. Although, I didn't realize I had the upgrade to Saturday. I was reading somewhere that the update needed debugging. Perhaps I received the debugged update. When I downloaded gb, I didn't realize at first that was what it was. I checked for upgrades and it just happened to be there.

The new update is working great. Battery life is WAY better although I also uninstalled ATK since the update and have been happy ever since. Coming from a Desire the biggest difference is when the phone is idle. It seems to manage battery usage a lot better in that category for me. I do also like the phone number that shows up in the text message thread. I tap on that instead of long press to get my call or contact actions. A little quicker.

I most likely did not have the att update prior to loading a custom rom. I remember that it distinctly prevented the Amazon app from being sideloaded. Good to know that an update fixed the limitation.

Yeah, they backed down and I believe phones now come with the sideloading ability. Didn't help me much. I wanted Monopoly and no one makes it for android.
