Help Argh, getting to settings while in ultra power saving mode

Hmm, bit of a problem on my S6.

I enabled ultra power saving mode, and the phone ran out of battery. When I booted it back up, it asked at the start which launcher I wanted for some reason, and I clicked TouchWiz, being the normal launcher.

The problem is, it's not the normal launcher when in UPSM, and loads of stuff is disabled on it - so in particular, going to settings only shows you a very limited set of the settings. The "special" launcher has a menu item to disable the mode, but the "normal" one doesn't, so now I'm stuck.

I've tried booting to safe mode - no different. I've looked at the boot menu, but there's nothing there apart from a factory reset which obviously I'd rather not do!

Can anyone think of a way to disable the bloody UPSM without being able to get to the settings app?

In the upper right, there should be a "more" button. Press that and choose option to disable UPSM. It takes awhile at that point so wait it out but it should revert to normal within a minute or two.

Nope, that's the problem - because it's in UPSM _but_ it's running the standard launcher, there are no "buttons" in the notification screen, except the one for settings - however this brings up the restricted settings that are in UPSM, which for some idiotic reason don't include power settings!!

Need to be able to disable without going in to settings or the quick functions on the notifications bar.

I wonder if you can do from the kies app?

Ok I think I see what you're talking about now. There's a stock "Home" launcher and a stock "Easy Home" launcher. Both are Touchwiz, but the latter has fewer options.

So I tried enabling UPSM but I'm spooked to use the Easy Home option just yet lest I end up in the same boat. When you booted into Safe Mode, did you see an option to exit Safe Mode? If so did you choose that or did you just reboot? If you chose the option to exit Safe Mode and weren't prompted to (re)choose your launcher upon reboot, then there may not be a way out, short of factory reset of course, which sucks. If that turns out to be the case, its an unfortunate design flaw.

No, sadly not. The only minor hope I have is running the power to nothing (which takes a while on UPSM) and then trying again - that's how I had to choose the launcher in the first place.

A wipe would be mighty tedious because I've got banking and authentication apps on there which will be enormously hard/time consuming/inconvenient to re-set up. Grrrr.

And frustratingly, there's a "Smart Manager " app in the tools folder that runs, and has a setting to enable/disable power saving and upsm. The power saving one works, but the ultra one doesn't do anything!!

Double grrr.

I understand your feeling. I faced it twice.. The idea is to trigger the Launcher Picker again by installing/removing current launcher. So you should do adb install/remove the launcher (not the system one) and the system will ask for picking another one. Here is my note. Hope it helps

Hi, looking for some help. My S7 edge is stuck in UPSM and there is nothing in the settings menu to get it turned off. I have tried holding down the volume down and power buttons at the same time, but it just restarts in the same UPSM mode, also there is not a "more" option in the settings menu. Any help would be appreciated.

Just fixed this on my note 5 with marshmallow, had to download a random launcher apk (i went with nova launcher) through the browser. Then just install, will prompt to allow 3rd party apps(initially i left the box checked that refers to allowing it once or always, noting happened after that install. Tried again but unchecked the box and had better luck) after the install i hit open, then the screen went dark other than the top bar, i waited for the display to shut off then when i hit the power button and swiped it asked me to choose a launcher. I chose the default, NOT GOOGLE NOW OR THE ONE I JUST INSTALLED. This brought me to the normal upsm home screen where i could simply exit normally

The easy fix - just open the app drawer, drag the google app to app info and drop, select disable, when prompted choose you service providers default launcher

If you use the upsm often, stick with the stock launcher for now (the issue can also mess with your home screen layout and some other settings when you do finally get free, which can get annoying). Google needs to adress this issue and update the now launcher, which I'm sure they're already working on.

My stupid note4 is stuck on ultra saving mode as the shortcuts icon on top disappeared.

And the limited setting don't include any option to turn it off. Grrrr
Limited settings: wifi, Bluetooth, sound, display, location.

One of the suggested solutions online was to install any launcher from the Internet, to promote the select launcher to appear in safe mode.

Did that. But it seems I hit another dead end as non of the launchers that appear seem to launch in safe mode! Or turn on any additional settings or even the mobile's wallpaper.

The useless three launchers are: ThouchWiz Easy Home, ThouchWiz home and Nova launcher.

I'm clueless, and the timing couldn't get any better.

Please help

I did this while not in safe mode, I would suggest trying it again in the normal upsm. The standard touchwiz is the launcher you should choose, the one you download doesn't matter, it is only to trigger the option. Also you should not need to perform a restart after the install. Hope this helps

Thank you for replying .
Followed your suggestion. Phone will still launch in grey.

Tried all launchers in image. All same result. Ultra save mode doesn't end.

Don't know what to try next. Any ideas?

Thinking of installing GoogleNow then disabling it. Might trigger something in the process. Doesn't seem to make sense though.

Senseless issues might need senseless solutions besides factory rest.

Yep
In the app info the force stop was the only clickable option.

Clicked it, nothing happened. Cleared app cache. Also no effect.
