Root [AT&T] A Couple ROM questions (ClockworkMod)

1. When I backup my ROM I assume I need to copy the backup file to my computer before I flash a new one? And if I need to ever get to the backup I just paste it from my computer back to my phone and use the restore option?

2. When I backup my ROM does that backup all my data too like texts, call logs, game saves? Or do I need to use another program (Titanium Backup?) to do that before I flash a ROM?

Basically where I'm at right now is rooted with clockworkmod installed. Just trying to clear a few things up before I attempt to flash my first ROM!

you don't need to copy your backups to your pc, but you can to make doubly sure.
I do a titanium and then a nandroid backup (through cwm)
I've used apps like sms backup to save current texts.I think there might be similar for call list maybe.

then I do a full wipe in cwm, flash the rom and then restore titanium. then sms backup if I need to
