All i can tell you as a flasher myself is that its a combination between kernel/rom/user
Trial and error bro.
Im finding lately that the best kernels are the ones that come withe the rom. For for example, liquidsmooth and slimbean. If youre on a d2 variant then Lean Kernel seems to work well with all the main aosp roms. Im on i9300 tho

What this man says!!

I find flashing a new kernel just causes me issues, so I stick with the one that comes with the ROM now.

Tomasek, Googy Max and Siyah kerners are good if you want control.
They work with the STweaks app to let you change all kindsa stuff from audio to charge current. Overclockable too :D

Ah, didn't realise you have the AT&T S3. I will move this over to that forum (sorry for your thread being moved so much!) as the kernels will be completely different from the i9300 ones

I have used a few different kernels, but found lean kernel gave me the best battery life.

Paired with slim rom 4.3 1.6 I get a full day with lots of usage. At bed time I'm still usually at 20-30%
