At&t goes Prepaid Android. Thumbs Down.

I know this doesn't really relate to the inspire, but I thought I'd throw it in. since its in the ANDROID category and it pertains to att.

LG's Optimus series moves to AT&T in a Go-Phone. (previously with Sprint, Virgin Mobile, and T-Mobile)

Their plans and data plans are a joke!

the LG Optimus Version on AT&T is called the Thrive (prepaid), and Phoenix (contract).

Lets talk about the prepaid.




Each of the following options are available to customers who choose the Smartphone $0.10/min Plan or Smartphone $2/day Unlimited Talk and Text Plan. Prepaid customers who choose a smartphone like the LG Thrive must choose a data package in order to use data services.

• NEW: $25 FOR 500MB
• $5 for 10MB
• $15 for 100MB

AT&T's data pay-per-use pricing for non-smartphone customers with five times the data for the same price. The pricing is $0.01 per 5kb

Talking about nickel and diming customers to death.

Holy Crap! I thought data plans on a contract phone were out of this world $25/2GB / $15/200MB).

Why would AT&T make such data plans. how would you ever use this phone as a SMARTPHONE with these data plans (unless you NEVER turned on the mobile data, and used it on wifi all the time)---or wish to pay an outrageous amount of $ to use this phone..??????

The LG series is a cheap, entry entry level Android phone. UNLIKELY you'll ever see any higher end phones on pre-pay (unless you bought it at FULL RETAIL).

Virgin mobile sells LG Optimus prepaid for $199.
Their plan is 300 min voice + unlimited data (Sprint 3G network) + unlimited texting for $25/month (taxes included).

Why would anyone go with AT&T?

I had the LG Ally when i was on verizon, which was LG's first android phone in the US, came out last year. The LG Thrive has nearly the same specs from a phone over a year ago. From the price ive seen ($179ish i think?) it's just not worth the price for the phone...
Not to mention i think the Thrive is just ugly. It's just not worth the price you'd be paying for the phone + all the prepaid stuff.

I don't understand why not just give 2gb for $25 to prepaid like contract plans...

At&t knows there network isn't great so they'll do anything they can to get as much money out of it as possible?

I think they want to make the prepaid plans such crap that it would actually look better to a consumer to sign a 2yr contract.

to get the $200 or whatever price on contract you have to pass a credit check

if you are 17-18 years old and have no credit you can pay up to a $500 deposit.

not everyone has credit of any kind. Some people rent and pay cash or buy all cars cash.

yes it is a horrible deal but some people dont have another option in their area

Exactly! There are people out there where this would be a way better option than signing a contract. Although if I were in this position I'd probably look strongly at Virgin Mobile. $25/month for unlimited messaging, email, data and web, and 300 anytime minutes seems hard to beat.

Yeah, I've had virgin mobile, and I am ten times happier with at&t. Their network is waaaaay better, I love actually having service when I visit family in the country! And this phone is so much sweeter than my old optimus. My internet would constantly not be working, and I need reliable internet! And it is nice to actually be able to watch videos, or play games without lag. Sure, at&t isn't perfect, but who is.
