Root [AT&T] Looking to try other ROMs

I'm looking to switch up my custom ROM choice as my current ROM is becoming dated....that being said, before I go swapping out ROMs, what are things I should consider? I'm guessing Titanium Backup (paid) is a good start, in order to backup apps and such so that I don't need to reinstall everything - is that correct? What else should I do to make swapping easier to get the phone back up and running quickly?

SMS Backup+ for restoring your messages.

these 2 are pretty much the only things i ever need to get up and running.

I'll look into SMS Backup+, but doesn't TB backup SMS as well?

if it does, i don't know how. it never worked when i was with Verizon, and it doesn't work now with AT&T.

Plus a nandroid backup in case you have an issue or want to go back to current rom fast and titanium backup pro (paid) will be a good friend to restore your apps make sure you have a current backup with TB I made that mistake once had to redownload newer updates
TB paid also has a feature to make a zip of all your apps that you can flash in recovery CWM or TWRP that's a time saver also

Yes, definitely have the nandroid backup. I create those regularly - just in case.

TB keeps a copy of the install file and its data I believe. So you still need to reinstall everything, it's just that you don't have to download it again and you keep all your data on that app.

oh, so if I have 100 apps installed, I still have to install them one by one, I just avoid downloading them again? Well...that almost doesn't seem worth the purchase price of TB then.

I know there's the free version, but I'm looking for the quickest/simplest way to implement other ROMs. If the paid version speeds up this process by being able to install the apps, or whatever, then I'd rather go that route. If it doesn't help out much, then I'll stick with free.

I'm still new to all this so this may seem like a stupid question, but how do you do a nandroid backup??

when you're in the custom recovery (either CWM or TWRP), select 'backup', then 'create nandroid backup'.

Use another launcher like Nova and backup your desktop layout

ES File Explorer is free and give you access to root folders too. No need for a paid one IMO.
