Being newer myself to this device, I got mine with JB 4.1.1. and rooted it easy.
Others have been on earlier 4.0.? (forgot) and have rooted also.
I don't know what it came with but what carrier will you be using?

Going with AT&T got an iphone 5 now and just gitting aggravated with it with my wifi and all. Put that phone back in be box and gonna play with my 4s till I git find a nice galaxy s3 for a price I like

I would think as long as it works on your provider there should not be a problem.

That's what I'm trying to figure out how that all works. Going from iPhone 5 to GS3 with same carrier

Nothing really to look for, all are the same (save the storage size). All can be rooted, probably easiest to read up on this:
