Root [AT&T] Samsung Galaxy Note 2 SGH-i317 AT&T Rooting & custom Recovery Advice Please

MerlinTT

Lurker
I am looking for some Advice and just a little HELP but mostly Advice!
I have what was suppose to as sold from FRY'S electronics as an unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note 2 what it is is a Samsung Galaxy note 2 SGH-i317 AT&T! My carrier is T Mobile I got The T Mobile sim card and the phone works and all that But I wish to remove all the AT&T junk from my phone.
So I have started digging around about rooting this phone and have found so many different ways in rooting this phone and some of the problems in doing so, one way says there way is safe from hackers others say just one click and your done
1 using the program Odin
2 ExynosAbuse-v1.40
3 then there is this one here androidcentral.com sorry it wont let me post it

I also wish to install a custom recovery so then you got these two to pick from
Note2 RootKit with TWRP and
ATT Note2 RootKit with CWM

I do not wish to have to come back here and say things like PLEASE help I rooted my phone and now it or this does not work or it is acting weird

So I wish to ask what way is best and safest to use rooting, custom recovery and if there is one a stable custom rom

I have done this on my old HTV EVO 4G and am not afraid but from all the post on the Samsung Galaxy phones and some of the problems like the rooting counter?? and opening up the phone when rooting so hackers can get in.
then I wish to ask for ADVICE and a bit of help on what way is best
then to have to cry for help because it is not working now

Thank you for ANY and ALL Advice and HELP
Bill

If the phone is on 4.3, this is the simplest way to do it. It is the way I used and it could not be more simple. 1. Go here:http://playfuldroidz.com/wiki/Saferoot ...Download the apk to phone. Install it and run it.If it works. It will ask you to update superSU. Do this and you should now have a rooted phone. If the apk does not work. Dont worry. It will not do any harm. 2. If it worked. Next step is go to playstore and install gooManger. Run it and from settings let it find the recovery for your phone. It will be a version of twrp I believe. Let it install it. After you have twrp installed. You can find the custom recovery you prefer and install it. I prefer Philz. Its your choice though. The bottom line is if saferoot apk works. You can do all this from phone. If it fails. No harm and you will have to go the other route with the kit. Good luck.

I need some help in understanding this Samsung galaxy note 2

I have been reading all that I can about my new phone a Samsung galaxy note 2 SGH-i317
from what I can tell from my lack of phone Geekizum there is two models a 7000 and 7005??
7000 is European 3g?? and the 7005 4g is USA?? then there are the sprint, Verizon , AT&T, and T-mobile fall under the 4g USA model??
my question is are all the phones from the USA Big four the same phone with different brands on them or are they made differently for each
company?? if not then why are some custom roms made for different phones i.e., sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile
Question if I have rooted my phone and have a custom recovery install can I install any rom?? or go from 4.1.2 to say 4.4???
the unlocked phone Fry's sold me ended up to be a AT&T phone but my carrier is T-Mobile so I wish to be able to find and use the t mobile hot spots but they are not on this AT&T phone
I have downloaded these roms the 1- Jedi X20,2- CleanROM ACE 5.0, and JellyBam v9.00
so if there is a better rom the jedi x20 and cleanroom ace v5 can someone point me that way Please??
but overall what are the differences between the phone if any and why????

I know how to root and flash custom roms
I have done this on my old HTC EVO 4G but on this Samsung galaxy note 2 it seems from what I have read is there are roms for the AT&T version and for the Verizon version and for the t mobile version etc.
yes I have been all over this web site and XDA but the more I read the it seems that this rom or that one once you flash it you have to then do this and that to make the camera work or to get 4g to work
at this point my note 2 is rooted and a custom recovery twrp is installed the next is a new rom this is were I do not wish to mess up there are so many roms out here for this phone and it seem most have bugs in them this are the one's I wish to avoid
but it also seem at this point it is download and use at your own risk
and be dammed for asking for help or advice from those that have been down this road!

I also had an HTC EVO 4g and the Samsung phones are not as easy to flash ROMs, especially with 4.4.2 kitkat out now. The basic premise is the same but you need to do some "smaller steps" to get what you want. For example, in the Note 2 (i317), you need to have the correct bootloader to flash 4.4.2/Touchwiz. It takes alot of reading and research to figure out what direction you want to go. Sorry, it's not as easy as before with these phones. Just make sure you do nandroid backups and backup your apps, data, pictures, and anything else.

Hello everyone, I also have rooted my samsung galaxy note 2, T-Mobile phone, I have also rooted previous phones in the past. My model # sght889, android version 4.2.2, workplace version aokp_t0ltetmo_unofficial_2013-05-06. My question is it possible to format internal memory and reinstall android cyanogenmod. Reason I ask, is my internal memory is full and I want to start with a clean slate. My device keeps stating that my internal memory is low. I have fewer apps on my device then before I rooted it. Anyone know what to do?

I do not think apps are your problem. If your not aware of it. You can use this app.https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.levelokment.storageanalyser&hl=en to find out. Make sure to allow it root access in it settings too.

Your are right apps aren't my problem, I look at storage it says I have almost 10 gigabytes used in miscellaneous, 5.86gb used in my rooting folder called clockworkmod. My question is can I format internal memory and start with a clean slate and keep my device rooted?

Sounds like you just need to do some spring cleaning. Those files under misc are mostly junk including your thumnails. You could go through them and delete them in settings. But be aware. Some will be recreated after you reboot. The cwm folder contains the backups that were created in cwm when you made nandroid backups with it. You do NOT want to delete those unless you have a excess of them. I do not know which version of cwm your using? But most newer versions have a option to make yout backups on internal or external. Sounds like you have made them on the internal. The backups are identified by date. Like this: year-month-day-time.. Personally, what I would do is clean up some of those misc files first. Then rebbot and see if you have gained any space back. Then you can look at the backups and see how many you have? I always keep at least one on intern and one on ext sd. You may be able to delete some but only if you have to many and only if you know your cwm is working properly to make nandroid backups. Sorry if it seems im being to long here. Just want to be sure you have something to fall back on before you start wiping data. One last thing. Boot in to recovery and let me know which vetsion you have too. Thanks.

This is a screen shot of what version I have, I tried deleting backups with root browser, and ROM toolbox and it won't let me delete files, I guess I have to do it from my home computer?

Well from that. Its obvious you know how to do something. Question was what recovery you have? Depending on which one. You should be able to delete backups in it. Enter recovery and at top. It will say which one you have. Also from that kernel. Have you asked these questions in that thread. Might be kernel related..

You seem to be Knowledgeable about the note 2 i317 with 4.4.2. I just bought one and need to root it and would like to run liquid smooth rom on it. I haven't been able to find any proven method to even root it can you help?

First things first you need to make a backup of your current system. Backup everrything important on computer or online storage or sd card. For root access try Kingo root, research root instructions for note2. Its actually very easy to do, first when you root you will have stock firmware with superuser access, then install clockwork mod and find a custom ROM that you like. Benefit of rooting is free WiFi tether! Good luck, and read all you can about rooting, kingo one touch root worked for me.

Towel Root is NOT supported on the i317. It is not on the list and if you try it then it also says it is not supported.
I have also tried to try the odin method from xda developers but the link to download the cwr6-
