AT&T Samsung Infuse on T-mobile - speeds?

My family has 5 Samsung Infuses and our 2-year AT&T contracts will be up shortly.

We are thinking about transitioning to T-mobile for that $30 100-minute 5GB plan whose price is far below anything AT&T would offer.

I realize I'll have to unlock the phones... not a problem.

The phone specs are here:

Like many AT&T phones it doesn't have Tmobile's 1700 Mhz GSM band

We're not in a major metripolitan area.

I've heard I may be stuck with edge speeds. Exactly how fast is that?

I've heard T-mobile is "refarming" during 2013.. that means we might eventually get faster service than edge?

Any other general thoughts about using AT&T unlocked phone on T-mobile? I heard one gentleman mention problem receiving texts with his unlocked AT&T phone on Tmobile... is that common?

My brother is using an unlocked AT&T phone on T-Mobile via Solavei. No problem with texts.

The refarming will only help if you're in a refarmed area. I haven't seen any concrete plans. These guys are trying to to track sightings of 1900mhz on T-Mobile. http://airportal.de

If you're moving 5 lines it seems like you should take a look at the current no contract postpaid plans. Depending on your data needs you might be able to do better than the $30 plan.

I have to agree at looking at the "Uncarrier" plans since you are moving 5 phones. You can get Unlimited Talk and 2.5 GB of 4G data per phone for $32 (plus taxes) per phone. Unlimited Talk and Data is $42 per phone ($210 total).

Additionally, you would gain data roaming (prepaid only offers voice), call forwarding, etc. And be able to get interest free loans if you want to buy any new phones.

Do all of you need data? There's a prepaid AT&T plan- $25 for 250 minutes and unlimited texts. The data add ons are quite expensive though.

Smart phones use data, pretty much regardless of how much you use.

I supposed for most wifi data would work. but if you have google, or weather updates that would try to use data.

Then you would adjust them accordingly/turn data off in settings.

I would bet you could, but that sort of defeats the purpose of having a smart phone wouldn't it?

If all I want is basic talk text I would be better off using a old(er) dumb phone, not to mention it would be cheaper.
