Root [AT&T] Should I, Can I, Revert to Bone Stock?

AT&T's push of JB today did nnot go OTA to my rooted (stock ROM) phone. Kies said it had a Firmware update but repeatedly failed (someone here told me it was due to being rooted) has me questioning whether I should try to just completely revert the phone back to bone stock.

I rooted it to play with some ROMs, which I did, but ended up getting it setup they way I like it with Nova and WidgetLocker. Now being rooted seems to impede getting OTA updates (not that I'm expecting many, or any, more mind you from AT&T) which I wasn't aware of when I did it.

I managed to reset my Update counter to zero but the phone stills says it's status is Modified.

With JB being pushed I'm thinking I want to, somehow, revert to completely, like out of the box, stock. I'm interested in arguments for and against and some advise about how to it.

Do you have the superuser app on your rooted phone? There is a toggle in the app that allows you to temporarily "unroot" your phone. Have you tried that, then downloading JB, then unchecking the temp unroot box from superuser?

If you're happy with what you have, why change it?

Primarily so that I can have Google Now. I've come to really like it in my Nexus 7 but that's not my daily drive device and the S3 is.

I watched a review on Youtube that showed that the perceived performance difference between JB and ICS isn't really any different so JB itself isn't really what care about.

As it is, with all power-saving off, apps closed, memory flushed, etc. I get Quadrant scores of around 5000 and it's plenty smooth enough for me.

Didn't know about that. I'll give it a try.

So there's no way to revert it back to bone stock (counter zero, status Normal) in case I ever have a warrantee issue? I guess I figured that, given how easy it was to root that it would be equally easy to reverse the process.

PS - I have Triangle Away which worked to reset the counter. Of course, it's up to 2 now after all my fiddling last night. 8-)

Well, doing here at work - in MAJOR violation of IT policies 8-) - and it seems to be working!

Of course, I unchecked root in SU before I tried to it so I'll never know if it was something with my personal laptop or that it was rooted...

...oh well.

Edit 1: It's in ODIN mode...looking really good!

Edit 2: FYI...This takes a good half hour from start to finish.

I your version of Kies up to date? I updated through Kies today and it worked the first time. I was rooted with clockwork recovery (no custom ROM). Was your phone doing anything while the update was going on?

As I stated, I checked Temporary Unroot (TUR) in Superuser AND tried the Kies Method on my work computer so I don't know which was the deciding factor. I didn't know about TUR last night at home. There's no doubt though that Kies is a POS program. Last time I tried it at home (a couple of weeks ago) it wouldn't even connect to the phone.

I have noticed a marked improvement in objective stats:

Using Quadrant, I noted the following:

PSM = Power Saving Mode On
PSMO = Power Saving Mode Off, all apps closed, memory cleared

ICS: PSM On = ~3400, PWMO = ~5100
JB: PSM On = 3734, PWMO = 5631

I like the update in general. More options plus Google Now.

I needed my phone stock with no root evidence for warranty and this guide did the trick:
