ATT wants app makers to pay

I really like the idea of wifi calling but can the carrier use the mins you use to wifi call against your allotment?

I like the wi-fi calling too. You would think the carrier cant charge wifi usage against us since its not hitting their direct services. Just like wifi data isnt counted against our carrier usage.....but I would bet they'd come up with some way to get a piece of the pie.

That is what I was thinking too. Either say that the wifi has to connect to their network at some point or charge us $10/month to include unlimited wifi calling on the plan

I was going to create a thread to suggest what smileys the forum should add to the stock list. The default list seems so bland and boring.....

There is already a thread for this.

I found out that V actually has large trucks with portable cell tower like structures for emergencies. They were in use here during fire season. Doing this makes V seem more civic minded.

They are called PIGS (acronym for something) and the 4G ones were first deployed in Florida last spring I believe for hurricane season. I also remember hearing that they had three or four in Indianapolis for the SuperBowl.

Cows, Pigs, they all taste good. Yeah, I got a new color yesterday.

Lol, looks like we could go for a good pig or cow BBQ! but it seems like its the customers being raked over the coals these days....

(well, that is a sweet surprise Pupkact, couldnt happen to a worthier personification!)

So, I was thinking. How much access does AT&T must have on your phone to be able to pinpoint what app is using data. For AT&T to do that, they would need TOTAL access to your phone and every app you have installed.

They should be able to see where the data is coming from and should be able to identify the host in some cases (netflix, spotify...) I am not sure about others but I am still at a loss for how they would be able to do this at all.

Is it just me or does AT&T seem like the kid who got pissed off (since the acquisition of T-Mobile got nixed) and wants to take his ball and go home?

If I was running that organization, I would have a come to Jesus meeting with my board and shareholders and there would be ONE topic on the table...

"Why do we keep pissing everyone off and how do we turn this around???"

Being that AT&T is among the top two carriers, yes, they are pissed off because.they didnt have their way. As far as the Come To Geezis meeting, they dont care about the way they treat customers. I just received a "Customer Survey" email from ATT this morning. I wonder if filling it out with honesty, will identify all disheartened customers and att take that info to ween these out as a means of "damage control"...lol

This is how they touted themselves at the MWC:
\2011 Mobile World Congress

Notice connected home - so they can throttle more bandwidth? I don't need a connected home. I need the cat pan scooped and the dishes loaded and unloaded from dishwasher.

And naturally , coming from their own web site, att touts themselves as the forerunner and the best. I stopped even loading their a tt.com page except when im ready to fork over my payment.. I DARE give them full access to an auto pay , so I "suffer thru having to load the page just to process a bill and look over my acct.

I dont ever read their self-supported news or announcements any more. Theyve proven how valued a customer is to them

I like how the article quoted att on "letting app developers pay". Let them pay? Att makes it sound like its a priviledge to pay att to "let" their app be available to att customers. Soumds like Jobs is reaching up from Hades grabbing att by the jools again in effort to squeeze android growth and or app availability by forcing devs to take their apps elsewhere.

Isn't the app market Google's baby? So how can they do this when they allow the app stores app (wow I like how that sounds lol) on att branded phones. I would love to hear Google's take on this?

It just sounds like they see these devs making money and they want in on the action of money they see devs making off their data stream.

Now what about app stores like amazon and heard Mozilla is making one? Those have to be downloaded by the user. So how will they charge devs when the app is a third party app needing to be installed by the user?

Plus what about apps that has to connect to the net to run. Are they going to charge the devs every time their app accesses their network?

Big blue wonders why they are falling fast to last place so quickly? They shoot themselves in the foot.

Maybe the ghost of jobs has possessed big blue.

Didn't jobs want devs who made apps for the iPhone sign something from keeping them from making apps for android to?

It sure seems like after Jobs and Ma Bells' divorce, they are still on the "down-load" sneekin' a "booty call" in. Because of Jobs hatred for Android, he made att sign a pre-nup that kept att customers from anythimg android for several years before gettimg that,....that, that "backflip" thing which was a smart "dumbphone" after att got their way with it. All for pushing the iphone on customers (so they n cap the data...making their shiny iphones one expensive paper weight)

Looks like a "post-nup" was signed too, if att gets their way with this "letting devs pay" to have their apps on att.

I have an interesting thought or hypothesis. What if AT&T is angling to set up its own app store? No dev charge for apps purchased through AT&T but they get the 30% cut. Then apply the dev charge for any other market AT&T customers use.

Just my conspiracy theory (putting on tinfoil hat now):D

That would be one scary world. I would consider any att-app nothing more than "bloatware" and if that scenario would ever happen, att would probably lock it so we wouldnt be able to remove them.

Google is now putting its foot down. How will devs feel about this:

'Use our payment system or we kill your app': Google to developers

so the only gripe is that google sys charges a higher cut from the sale?

google wants to do this to simplify the purchase process for the consumer?

then... why not .. google match or be a little lower than the other service providers? we all know google can and still make a bundle.

google being the open source promoter that they are.. they should not block other "good and safe" methods and open competition.

Tsk tsk, a good thing just never stays the same. Google may be about to screw themselves.... time will tell. If google is trying to "simplify" the customer experience, then why are they forcing app developers in a corner.

I can understand consolidating the means for buying apps, but somewhere along the way this move is going to cost .
