Audible notification of SMS while in a call.

Is there a way to receive any sort of audible notification if you receive an SMS while in a call? I have found a dead thread from march with someone asking this on a G1, and they received no reply. I have a Moto Droid on Verizon, and the green light blinks if I am in a call, but there is no way to notice that with the phone stuck to my face. Does anyone know of a setting or an app to make this happen? I am sorry if this is a novice question, but this is truly driving me nuts. I have tried installing a few third party SMS apps like SMSPopup to see if they would help, but alas, nothing has worked. Thank you!

Open the SMS Application.
Click on the Menu
Click on Settings
Scroll to the bottom
put a check mark in the Notifications box
Pick a ringtone if you want
and/or Put a check mark in the vibrate box
