Audio CD to MP3

For anyone that rips cds to mp3 what have you found to be the best settings for ripping your cds and do you do any further compression after? This should take into account quality vs sizing. Got a 16gb sd card in my Razr so I know I have a bit of room but don't want to needlessly take up space if I don't have to.

I tried different encoding bit rates and quit increasing when I could not hear the difference. I ended up with 192kbps. I did not try different algorithms.

Thanks for the reply. I did a lot of digging today and I'm going to try variable bit rate wma format files and see how they work out. Using 135 - 215 setting.

I archive in high bitrate mp3 (256-320k VBR) on the PC. This is due to flexibility and compatibility. For my phone, I am now encoding in ogg vorbis at VBR setting #5 (about 160k). The sound quality is surprisingly good. There's some debate on how it compares to aac/m4a. Not much difference in the bitrate to quality ratio, but I definitely prefer both to mp3 or wma.
