Help Audio out causes screen skipping

When I plug headphones or a stereo into the 3.5mm audio out it causes the screen to jump around as if something is randomly tapping the screen & pushing buttons. Songs jump forward and back, it switches around to other home screens, etc. It happens both with the stock rom and Apex.

Any ideas of how to stop this?

Edit: The song skipping to the next one/pausing/etc happens when the headphone jack is jostled.

is it still under warranty? if so, it looks like it needs to be returned.
