Help Audio playback on wired devices

I cannot get audio to playback on devices that are wired. The headphone jack takes plugs with the third "band" around the post which is what enables microphone use in the headphones. Normal cables with the standard two "bands" do not allow playback.

Is there a setting, cable or adapter that will allow me to playback on devices other than the headphones?

I have used regular headphones in the phone and not had any issues at all. What is the exact problem you are facing?

with exception of the headphones that came with the phone, inconsistent playback when connecting other types (without a mic) of headphones or an 3/8 cable. only thing I've narrowed it down to for successful playback audio are headphones with 3 "bands that allow the mic function on the headphones.
