Augen Netbook Help

I bought my son a cheap little Augen Android Netbook and I hate the OS on it. The built in youtube doesnt even work and he loves YouTube, and the "appmarket" is absolutely horrible and has nothing useful available. I guess I was wrong in assuming the netbook would be very similar to my phones Ive had - the touch screen.
I want to root and put a new Android on it but have no experience with it..Any help or links to guides would be appreciated because I havent found anything useful.

Sounds like it might be running an old version of Android, is it 1.6 or something. It needs 2.2 Froyo for the latest version of Flash, in order to work with Youtube.

BTW where do these Augen Android netbooks come from... China? Google has got the Augen website marked as hosting malicious software, so it doesn't look too good for these devices.

augenus <dot> com - to stop anyone accidentally clicking on the URL. 'Warning - visiting this web site may harm your computer!'

Unfortunately a good many of the import netbooks/tablets/phones coming from China are on very low end hardware with many services unavailable due to licensing restrictions (ie. the Android Market)

They set up alternate appmarket, often times with copied or pirated apps and virtually no support. Unless you can find a way to root and flash a custom rom, i doubt there's much you could do.

Thats what I am interested in, flashing a new rom on it that functions better...any ideas?

I have the Augen 109 netbook with ARm11 800mhz cpu, 256 MB rem, 8 GB internal memory, and Android 2.1. I agree that it seems a little limited at first blush and would also like to "upgrade" to 2.2, 2.3, or better. will the Arm11 handle that? How do we go about doing that?

I read that Augen had gone out of business in May, so no support or repairs going forward. If you root your Augen device or damage it in any way, you are out of luck getting it repaired or restored to factory settings.

Try downloading from andappstore.com. Among the apps are a couple of terminal programs. From a terminal you should be able to use linux commands to root your netbook. I haven't had one that long, so haven't gotten too deep into all things Android, but from what I understand about the Arm cpu that these things run, there is no HAL, so you have to custom write the interface between the cpu and each piece of hardware. The manufacturer has done that for the Android version that came with your netbook, so if you flash a different Android, you may brick your netbook. Augen is now out of business (May), so there is no support or repairs available.
