I just stumbled across this thread because I was getting the same error on a Mytouch 3G slide and I found a way to fix it. all I had to do was force the phone to authenticate thru wifi and not the cell network once, then I was able to authenticate successfully theregular way after that. the way I did it on my phone was to remove the sim, but on a CDMA phone like yours you could try to activate airplane mode (settings>Wireless & networks), then turn on wifi and connect to a working wifi connection, log into the google talkapp, then disableairplane mode.
