Authentication - SMTP account

Lurker
I have set up K-9 Mail on my Orange San Francisco, but there is one problem. I can't send emails when I am away from home.

BTW, the phone doesn't yet have a SIM in it - for now it's wi-fi only, but I hope that doesn't make a difference.

Having looked around and spoken with my ISP, the problem seems to be this:

1. Sending mail is on an SMTP account.
2. The ISP requires authentication when sending mail via a different ISP.
3. Authentication required is user name and password.
4. K-9 requires you to provide user name and password for fetching mail - no problem there.
5. K-9 does not ask for user name and password for sending mail.
6. There appears to be no setting in K-9 which I can set to provide a workaround.

Any ideas?

Many thanks. I had been looking there, and somehow managing not to see the answer. It works OK from home, and maybe tomorrow I'll have a chance to try it from elsewhere.

You're welcome! K-9 has lots of configuration possibilities and it can take a white to find the one I'm looking for.

The only difference it makes is that it works from home because you're connected to the internet via your ISP. If you did not use WiFi it would never work as you'd be connecting to the internet only via your carrier instead. A lot of ISP's do this as a spam countermeasure to prevent spammers from using their SMTP servers to send spam.

Most mail apps should have SMTP authentication settings. They may be under advanced or accessed via another menu.
