Auto brightness control

I wondered how everyone set their brightness - I was comparing my Hero with my wife's iPhone at home last night and the Hero was a lot dimmer in comparison because of the auto-brightness. I disabled it for the first time and cranked up to brightness and the display looked so much better - I just wondered what others thought about this and whether battery life would be affected greatly turning up the brightness.

Brightness is a major factor in all devices battery usage. Laptops, Phones, etc.

I used to have a Sidekick with a sensor, and it was pretty accurate and certainly helped save battery life. I have a G1 and it does not have a sensor.

I did collaborate on Timeriffic in the market.

We built this to save battery life and it seems to help me. Hardware of course varies, but I have held my HTC Dream/G1 next to an iPhone and the brightness is at dim is much brighter, which likely means more battery draining, but it is nice to crank it up and see a beautiful screen.
