Auto rotate not working right!

I hope you can help me! I recently bought a second hand Samsung galaxy S2 phone.
Its on the jelly bean 4.1.2 official stock firmware on it.

I noticed that when I activate the "auto rotation" feature and hold the phone vertically then tilt it hortizontally, it switches fine! But when I then try to tilt it back to vertical, it does not switch! Any ideas?

I have tried various apps to try and correct this, to no avail.

Have you tried the trial version of Ultimate Rotation Control from the playstore?

It sounds like the sensor in your phone is faulty. That app might let you override it.
