Auto Start Apps

I tried searching but haven't found any recent posts about this, so maybe I missed the "fix".

I have an EVO, and I use the Task Killer.. but every single time I open it there are 8 - 10 apps that are running, that I never opened. And now I can see the location services icon running when I am just writing a text message, so obviously a background program is using it, and it's a program I didn't open.

I disabled the Latitude app from auto updating, so it isn't that.

But basically, I don't want any apps running when I'm not using them, especially ones I didn't even start in the first place. My battery drains fast enough.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1st problem, stop using task killers.

They aren't running, they are just cached.

They aren't, they are just cached. Don't worry about them. Every time you kill an app, android sees open memory and will just re-cache that app, thus using MORE battery than if you would have just left it alone.

Do a search on here for task killers. There are MANY threads which will explain it more if you want to read up on them.

Does this assume that apps are perfectly behaved?

A very good article about this can be found here, it explains a lot.

Interesting thread. Seems to be a few cases of badly behaved or buggy software doing stuff in the background, e.g. a golf scoring app which keeps using the GPS when it is supposed to be 'cached'.

I've actually had a couple of situations like this myself. I've took my phone out of my pocket, found it physically hot and the battery is drained a lot more than expected. Because of some app I had supposedly exited, but was still doing its stuff in the background rather than being 'cached'. I had one app fruitlessly and repeatedly trying to ping Facebook for no apparent reason, even when it was in background. 1) I don't use Facebook. 2) It's impossible for the app to reach Facebook.
