Help auto sync and gmail push

hi guys

i know that there have been other threads addressing this issue but i can't get a solid answer regarding this issue. gmail push stopped working. i noticed under

settings ->accounts & sync -> autosync - this option was turned off. when i turn it on, i get my emails updated in the gmail app. but if this feature does what i think it does, which is checking the gmail server for new email on a regular basis, then the whole purpose of push is useless. i only want to use gmail push because it saves battery life since it doesn't HAVE to check the server every 5 minutes or whatever interval it is set at. the email just gets pushed to the gmail app.

is this right? does anyone get gmails pushed to their app when this autosync feature is unchecked? Thanks!

I have autosync off for gmail. When I want to check emails, I open gmail - Menu- Refresh. Sometimes when I send an email I have to do the refresh (it is sporadic and not much of a hastle). Hope this helps.

I've been searching this issue myself this morning and I'm a bit surprised by the general lack of interest in it.

I guess most people will just have auto-sync enable all of the time so they won't notice it. But for those of us that would rather just sync when we want to, this is a PITA.

Hotmail seems to do this ok so it could be an option to get Gmail to push to Hotmail...

I have had this issue for a while, even on my HTC Evo3d. Push email doesn't work. Blame Google, for some reason it doesn't work and they haven't bothered to fix it. Look at the comments in the review section in the Market.
