Auto sync when roaming

Bit of a strange one here, but I couldn't find anything that answers my query. I'm going on holiday next week, and want to minimise the amount of data I use in the first couple of days, during which I'll be looking for a local SIM card (no access to wifi where I'll be). I don't want anything to sync in the background (Gmail, Calendar, Weather, etc), but I still want to use data services on my phone (to send out a tweet, for example); in order to do this, am I right in saying that I need to turn data roaming on, but turn autosync and background data off? I don't want to see my data arrows flashing at all, unless I'm 'consciously' sending or receiving data.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, you need to leave data on and turn Autosync off. If you block also background data, some apps, for example Market, will not work, because it need background data also (but it's not a problem to turn it on before accessing Market).
I'm not sure if all apps (like Facebook, Weather ...) also use background data, or normal data transfers, maybe it would be better to turn data off and turn it on just when you need it? I've used "apndroid" widget for this, as long as you use GSM, it's the best solution (it doesn't work on US CDMA).

Cool, that's probably the best foolproof way. Thanks.

Hey everybody,

I just bought an SG2 LTE (Android 2.3.5) and I was wondering whether it is possible for the "Background data" and "Auto-sync" settings (which are always ON) to override the "Data roaming OFF" setting under "Wireless and network".
In other words, as long as I ALWAYS keep the "Data roaming OFF", is it possible to still incur data roaming charges when traveling abroad, IF the other 2 settings were left ON? Can any 3rd party application modify the settings so it would be able to override the "Data roaming OFF" and therefore get connected?

I'm not worried about using any data while in my own network, actually I'd like to have it always ON (that's why I'd like to keep the background and sync settings ON, all the time) but I'd like to make sure that while abroad there would be no data traffic, whatsoever, except when connected to local WiFi.

Thanks.
