why does this software need to autoupdate so often? why can't I swipe away the message on the INFO screen until I update? why is there no EASY option to disable this garbage?

Go to settings>about>software updates

There should be an option to turn off updates from downloading automatically

Ok - there is no ABOUT in my SETTINGS. But I found it eventually.

Although SOFTWARE UPDATES appears there, there is nothing to check or do - it's just info. No way to shut it off.

Which kind of begs my next question: Why do so many people have so many different menu options for the same telephone? I would think that the constant updating would keep most folks in line.
