Autocomplete for noobs

i feel like a bonehead for asking this question but its something thats annoying me.

the autocomplete while using the stock keyboard will allow me to reuse searches but i cant edit them.

for example

i search

premierleague top scorer 2008

and then i want to search

premierleague top scorer 2009

how do i do that without having to retype the whole thing again. i know its probably really straight forward but i cant fathom it.
