Autoconnect wifi on London Underground

Does anyone here use the Virgin Media Wifi on the London Underground? It is available in most station ticket halls and on the train platforms but not while the train is in the tunnel between the stations. The wifi requires an initial sign on but then reconnects automatically as the train travels from one station to the next. If you do not have wifi connection for a specified period you need to repeat the sign on process again. The sign on process involves going to wifi setup, selecting the Virgin Media Network and pressing "Connect". I want is to have this initial sign on to occur automatically whenever I am on the underground.

I tried using Tasker to do the initial sign on using the context 'wifi near' but I can't find a way in Tasker to make the connection. I tried using a plugin "wifi connect" that I found on google play but it didn't work. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Thom. My WiFi is always turned on. Are you saying that I need to turn it off and then on again before it will connect? How will it know which network it is supposed to connect to?

It will take some experimentation. I don't have your phone and am quite a ways away.

I assume you have the option set to ignore weak WiFi signals. If you do then when you are in range of one that you have connected to in the past it should (I believe) connect you again.

(My operation is to have WiFi on when I am in the office and off when I'm not. Tasker does that for me. With WiFi on when I visit a customer location it want to connect to one of their WiFi networks.)

I have a Galaxy S5 phone. I agree, normally, at home and at work, my phone will automatically connect to the wifi when I am in range. I don't have to do anything. With the London Underground wifi it's different. It doesn't automatically connect until I go to wifi settings, select the underground network and press connect. Once I've done that the first time it will automatically reconnect each time unless there is a long time period (more than 30 minutes) since I was last connected. I know this is not unique to me as friends have noticed the same thing. There must be a way of connecting automatically using Tasker. The signal is usually VERY strong so it's not a problem with a weak signal.

I guess they have somehow configured the system to work like this to prevent several hundred phones from trying to connect when a train full of people arrives in a station.
