Automatic reinstall from Google Play not working

My Nexus phone crashed and I had to reinstall OS to 4.0.4 version. I logged into Google Play with my old username/password and told it to update all apps but I don't see any of them reinstalling on this OS. Is there something else I have to do to get Google Play to remember me and what I had installed?

Android requested an OS update and reboot which I did. I still can't automatically get all the apps associated with my username/password to reinstall. Should that just happen automatically when I log into Google Play?

you did not have your apps backed up?

I always use Super Backup, and keep a backup copy on the extSDcard...

was a great help when I got my "new to me" Note 4.
I just clicked on 'Restore' and it looked at the Sd card from the old S5, and Wallah!
everything back to normal.

a few updates occurred after that, but oh well.

I used three different programs to backup my apps but none seem to see the data and they all can't restore. Doesn't Google Play remember your apps associated with your email address? Is there any other way to get my old apps via Play Store and save time?

Thanks!

Yes, but the automatic reinstall feature only properly works with v5.x onwards,

Play Store/Menu/My Apps/All will list everything associated with your account. Just Install all those you want on the device. You don't have to install one at a time, you can queue them up.
