Help Autostart Question

Hello Everyone, thanks for the great forum, I've been picking up a lot of good info here.

I have one question that I haven't been able to find an answer for. I've picked up my phone just under a week ago now and I've really loved the Android platform and I think I made the right decision going with the Moment VS the Hero. What I don't understand, and haven't found a way to combat is that when I tend to set down my phone I run Advanced Task Killer Free (latest version) and I tell it to kill all running apps to conserve battery.

When I come back to my phone there are 10 to 20 things running again, most of which being applications that were default installs and I don't use. I've gone through the app menu and disabled Autostart in the settings of everything possible but it is still happening, and often.

Does anyone else have this issue? If the battery wasn't so quick to drain I really wouldn't care but when I woke up today Advanced Task Killer Free said Sprint Navigation was running. Why? I've been looking for an app that will tell you everything that Autostarts and stop them but I haven't found anything.

Is this just a Android way of life currently, is it no big deal, or is this bothering everyone who is trying to get the most life possible out of their battery/Moment?

I'd love a solution if anyone has one.
 
I'm having the same problem. Startup Auditor (99 cents in the Market) seems to stop most applications but not Sprint Navigation. I also use Advanced Task Killer to shut down apps that are running in the background. Not the best fix but probably the best one unless you root your phone.

I don't have an issue like this. There are only 3 or 4 apps that restart again in the background if I kill them.
However, the FoxNews widget used to cause all of my other apps to randomly open in the background. I opened about 1 every 10 secs until I uninstalled the widget.

Warning... I'm about 90% sure that Startup Auditor caused Android to go into a boot loop when I UNINSTALLED it on my first Moment. Google it, there's some definite reports out there about it causing it issues.

Thanks for the heads up. I've uninstalled it twice, but I haven't experienced any problems. I will keep an eye on it, though. I don't need stuff like Moxier Mail starting up and continuing to start when I don't use them. Any suggestions on what to do?
 
There's definitely differing schools of thought on whether processes running in the background really affect performance and battery life. Once I got my second Moment, I didn't install any sort of managers and honestly I've noticed little difference. of course YMMV.
 
Yea, MoxierMail is another culprit for me as well. I don't currently use it but somehow it is still running regularly. For a device with such a limited battery they should be a bit more liberal with letting users choose their own functionality level, for instance, why the hell can't I remove the Bejeweled Demo? :-/

I'm holding out hope that the pending Android update will be a big step forward for customization, I guess we'll see. I wasn't impressed with Samsung's support of the Instinct so I'm a bit nervous, other than that I have loved every Samsung phone I've had so hopefully the Moment will turn the tide when it comes to updates/expansion/support.

Android is a really cool platform, now is the time for them to step up.

Thanks for the advice in reference to the autostart issue. If anyone else has any advice I'd love to hear it.
 
Killing tasks is not going to help anything and in the long run will cause more problems. Read FAQ: Why You Shouldn’t Be Using a Task Killer with Android Geek For Me – Android CDMA Sprint Hero if you need information on this. Linux/Android are very capable on managing memory, cpu, and other system resources. After a while it will end tasks that are doing nothing and keep things balanced. By ending them prematurely, you make some apps have to start that process completely from scratch, which wastes more resources. The system is smarter about itself than you, so don't try to fix it or you'll just break it. If you want to stop foreground apps from running needlessly in the background try commantalb on the market. I use it to close the browser and phone apps when not using them.
 
After extensive testing, I found that task killers have NO effect on my battery life. None. Nada. Zilch! And that goes for the battery in my Samsung Moment, too!:D:D
