Root [Avail] Questions about my avail...

Wuverul

Newbie
Alright. I just rooted my avail. The reason being I want to change carriers.
Considering T-Mobile and ATT are both GSM carriers, I'd assume it'd work. HOWEVER

I was wondering how you would unlock the sims on these phones. I'm a complete noob to android (or smartphone in general. Phone before this was a straight talk slider phone. One before that was a tracfone flip phone). I love this phone, but I don't like ATT.

What I'm getting now for $30... 500 megs web, 200 texts.
What T-Mobile will give me for $30... Unlimited web, Unlimited text, 100 minutes.

SO the choice, for me at least, is obvious. However, I have no idea how to do it. That's where you come in...

Err....

Care to explain? Lol XD I seriously have NO idea. I just rooted it so I could sim unlock it. Or does rooting already unlock it... I have NO idea.

Sorry, but rooting does not unlock the phone. In my clockworkmod thread in the credits part you can try the russion website. they managed to unlock the phone for free with a program. I have not tried there method for our phones yet. I hope that helps.

How did you root your avail go phone? I want to root mine!

Its actually pretty easy. Theres two codes you type into the dialer. one is to disable CIQ and the other initiates root access. I didn't save the pages i found them on but i will look and post if i find them again. Also im pretty sure you still have to install the SU binary and all that jazz. If you dont you will lose root access on reboot i think.

As for the OP. Im pretty sure the only one that can unlock a SIM is the carrier. But u dont need it. My Avail is a GoPhone and it has accepted various sim cards. Right now im using a straight talk sim with the $45 unlimited plan in mine. I didn't have to remove a network lock or anything. BTW for anyone else that is having issues with wanting to use this carrier or that carrier or wanting to go prepaid blah blah blah...I saw on ST website that they now allow customers to purchase SIM cards that will work in almost any phone. Just check out their website.

Okay found it. To disable carrier IQ type *983*24737# into the dialer. afterwards you should get a little popup saying "CIQ disabled". Next type Dial *983*7668# into the dialer. Now you should get a message saying "waiting for root...". Let it sit for a minute or so and then you should have root access. Im not sure if it gives you full root because afterwards i downloaded root checker from the marketplace and it said it wasnt fully working so i downloaded superuser and busybox. Ran superuser and in options did a SU binary check and updated/installed it, then back to root checker basic and it said it was working correctly....*huff*. This is how i did it and it worked for me 100%.

You may not even have to disable CIQ, but i seems like mine would throw an error on the root code until i disabled CIQ

What I get from AT&T for $30 is... service.

What I would get from T-Mobile for $30 is... A phone to use on wireless only with no service available.
