Root [Avail] Wifi Tethering not working.

Starting this this thread so as not to clutter up Anthony062991's Rom thread.

I tried with my desire HD, no go. Everything connects, but no internet.
I am thinking, that since we are both using straight talk, it is a matter of them blocking it. Last night i tried to stream a google movie i rented, and recieved an error message saying that my carrier does not allow streamind this data. So, they can block certain types of access. Any one on straight talk able to get wifi tethering to work?

I think It's because we are using straight talk network witch is a little different.. But good news! Try the latest version android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users - Google Project Hosting and it should work pretty good. The first time I tried to connect it wouldn't connect, but It will connect after a few tries. Actually it will work great for other people that are trying to use wifi tether. Make sure you are rooted or else it wont work..
 
I havent been able to get that app to work yet, but it is not straight talk blocking it. My atrix 4g tethers fine with the built in tethering. I am using redpil hybrid rom.
 
i dont think straight talk blocks tethering. They actually advertise it with one of their phones, dont remember which one. My GF has one of their phones from walmart which has tethering and it works. It also works with the other nokia phone of which i am using the sim in my avail so it shouldn't be blocked. If anything i would think it would be more like something built into the phone from att to make it not work if it doesn't get some kind of permission from their network (which i am not on). Thats a long shot but if it is indeed being blocked then i would think it would be software or something att has built into the phone. Anthony could probably give a little more info on that matter since he has built on the ROM.
 
I tried the app that anthony recommended and it works. Throughput is diminished a bit but that was expected. Only problem is that it won't let me changed the network profile to normal. It only allows you to set it to Auto or Adhoc. I didn't have any problems with anything not connecting or pulling IP addresses. Few things i changed were changed the device profile to ZTE Blade, and change IP format to 192.168.1.x/24. will play around with settings a little more tonight and see if i can squeeze any more performance out of it.
 
I don't know. I feel like a stone age man, but i cant get it to do anything. My other phones work, so i do not need it, but it's driving me nuts. Glad you got it working.

well if thats the case and youve got nothing to lose then i suggest wiping it clean and doing a fresh install of the ROM and go from there.
 
Okay, i have now installed one.two, and i have the same problem. NO TETHERING. Any way, just to let you know i can't figure it out. My 5 other phones are no problem, must be a setting somewhere. Maybe apn related. Just dont know.
 
How did you set up your APNs? I tried manually at first and it worked horribly then i downloaded this app called tweakker and you just select straight talk from a list and it automatically sets everything up. Has worked way better for me.
 
Found it also, haven't tried tethering since, but did have my data turned off, and went through the security department to get it turned back on. The asked if i had been tethering, etc...... and told me it was against the service agreement. so be careful.
 
I dont really use it. i just wanted to get it set up so i would have it just in case i did need it. Thats weird that they say it is against their TOS considering some of their phones have the feature.
 
They were real concerned that i had modified my software for faster download speeds, streaming etc.... i did look at the TOS, and it is there. But i asked could i download 400 mb files. He said yes, as long as i used the task manager to close all programs when i am done. Said it wasnt enough to hit the home button. Fair enough.
 
Update. Continued to download 400 mb files, and would shut off the data connection after. They totally shut me off. Would not. Reactivate the phone. Had to buy a new sim card and start over. They did transfer my number to the new sim, so I didnt lose my phone number. Anyway, it's not unlimited with straight talk.
 
I have been using the native WiFi hotspot capabilities of 2.3.6 on my Nexus One for about two years now. I have an unlimited data plan but have often exceeded my 3GB download limit at which time, they would throttle my connection speed to 65Kbps. After the month was up, my speed would resume.
Two weeks ago, I got the dreaded T-Mobile screen the that blocked my Internet access and said that I could turn my Smartphone into a Mobile HotSpot for $15.00 per monthy.
Not liking the BS of them charging me to use my unlimited data plan, I tried many things to get around the problem. It appears to me that they are monitoring the traffic and/or websites that tethered users generate when tethered. I found that I could connect directly to Google servers but couldn't get to websites that I frequent. I thought that it might be that they are looking for TCP/IP headers generated by PC based browsers that would be different from headers generated by the Droid browser. Google Chrome is my default browser so I tried IE, Mozilla and Safari. Initially Mozilla worked for about 15 minutes then they stopped it. None of the others worked at all. Next I tried connecting from work which I had been doing for about a year and it worked for a few hours and they caught me again and blocked it. I happened to be traveling out of my home area and tried to connect and it worked fine for as long as I needed it.
In the past, I decided that there was no big reason to root my Nexus because my tethering always worked, until now, so I rooted it. I then installed Wireless Tether for root users and it didn't work. T-Mobile still blocks it.
So, it appears to me that T-Mobile is monitoring the actual traffic coming through their network and they seem to do this on a localized area. If this is the case, I don't see a way around it unless you want to move or completely change all of your surfing habits.

Seems to be the same problem with carriers in Canada.. hotspot worked great not long ago.. but now I get connected and PC says no internet.. and nothing works.. so.. I got nothing.. trying two phones.. different carriers.. different Samsungs.. one is SII unlocked from UK with Samsung update to ICS.. and other is still 2.3.5.. anybody.. was tryin PDAnet today.. so far a bust there..

I have tired what seems to be over 100 apps & decided this phone just can't be a Wi-Fi hot spot. Then you became my hero by posting that link. It works great.
