But if your like me I cant be assed to read all that so would just put my trust in AVG.

Is that not what Playstore does? check that apps are safe to be downloaded?

And that's exactly what malware developers are hoping you'll do, refuse to read the permissions. That's the easiest way to get their app installed on your device. I'm not saying AVG is malware, I'm simply saying that users should always read the permissions and never rely on the google play store to keep you safe. The weakest link in any system is the user.

And, no, Google doesn't check every app. Google only removes an app after it has been reported by several people. But, by then hundreds of users could already have malware on their devices.

The play store regularly scans the store for malicious code. There's even client side scanning on android 4.2+ for apps that you don't download from their store.

I have AVG on my PC for well over 10 years brilliant never had any problems but don't like these permissions for the phone........gaining access to this and that without me knowing

Look at what the app does. A lot of these apps aren't simply malware scanners but include firewalls, call/message filters, anti-theft tools, so they do need a pretty extensive set of permissions to do all of that.

It does also mean that if you wanted to smuggle a serious trojan onto a phone, a fake security app would be a good way of getting a lot of permissions without looking odd.

There are no viruses on Android. This is simply a company seeing their market share decline due to the immense growth in mobile computing. If you use common sense when installing apps, you won't have trouble.

That is a good answer....Thanks

It's the remote wipe/remote lock and find the phone using google maps, plust in the pro version, the ability to password protect settings and selected apps in an 'app locker' (secure folder). as others have said, viruses are not a problem on Android, but the A/V could stop you passing an infected file/attachment on to a windows pc.
