Help .AVI, .mp3, brightness issues

Hello,
I have transferred a number of movies to the microSD card on my captivate, as well as songs. All songs I have transferred are .mp3, and all of the TV shows and movies are in .AVI. However, only about 30% of the time, I can get them to work. When I try to open some files, I get the error UNSUPPORTED FILE TYPE. In addition to these errors, sometimes the phone randomly shuts off. This happens every few days. Also, every time I manually adjust the brightness settings, a few hours later I use the phone again and the brightness settings have changed themselves.
This phone is completely stock, has not been rooted or modified at all. Is there something simple I'm missing here? Is there an easy way to fix these problems? Are other people having trouble with this too?
Thanks in advance,

AVI is just a container. There are all sorts of codecs that can be used for both the audio and video inside of the video file, and some of those then have dozens of settings and options still. Likely some of your AVIs use settings/codecs that the Captivate can't handle (it's not a desktop and doesn't have the same power).

Best thing to do is use a program like Handbrake to transcode these files into a format that the Captivate can easily digest. You'll probably save considerable space on your MicroSD card in addition. Instructions are on the Captivate FAQ:

Transferring movies from DVD - CapFAQ

Just skip to step 2 and open the existing AVI file instead of the folder ripped from DVD.
