Awaiting Gingerbread update - What all to backup?

I am newbie to Android.. So pls excuse is this is a dumbo question :)

I am expecting Gingerbread update soon (Samsung Galaxy SL), but just want to prepare for it as of now. What all pieces of information (data, apps, contacts etc) do I need to backup before going for the official Gingerbread update ?

Btw, I have not and would not be rooting my phone.. Which android app can I use for above purpose ? Also, does the phone memory get cleared after the update, I may have to temporarily move the apps to a temporary sd card then.

Pls suggest.
Thanks

The official OTA update "shouldn't" require a full wipe before installing. However, its still a good idea to backup.

You cannot backup apps and their data (i.e. saved games) unless you are rooted. And if you are rooted, you wouldnt be waiting for the ota update. You can however make a "list" of your apps, using AppBrain. But again, this will not backup the actual apps and data, it just makes a list of the apps you have.

Your contacts/calendar should be backed up to your gmail, provided all your contacts are Google Contacts and not Phone Contacts. You can check this by logging onto your gmail form your computer, and checking to make sure all your contacts are there.

Texts can be backed up with the app SMS Backup and Restore.

Hi I am using the app 'backup master' to backup all my data. I directly downloaded it from the android market and it says in the description that it does not need rooting. I have already backed up all of my data with this app successfully,So you can give it a try.:)
