Help Awaking from standby/sleep

Do you really need to press the power on button to wake the phone up everytime the screen goes to standby? is there not an option to tap the screen?
 
You have to use the power button, if there were an option to just tap the screen then your phone would probably be on all the time if it's in your pocket or bag and drain the battery ;)
