B07 software update

I just noticed that the new B07 software update adds a new portable hotspot option in Settings > Wireless & Networks. I can't try it because the Awe I'm experimenting with isn't activated but I was wondering if anyone else has tried it and if so whether it's free and how well it works.

Thought I'd let anyone interested know of another root option that I found that worked for me after the latest software update when Cydia Impactor, Motochopper and RootMaster all failed.
VRoot ver 1.7.9.2 seems to have done the trick. Requires a computer and you might have to ignore a few malware warnings from your AV software (my post-installation AV and malware scans showed three 'suspicious' android executables but after deleting them, scans were clean) but it seems to have worked according to Root Validator, Titanium Backup and Lucky Patcher.

I'm curious to hear from anybody that has installed the latest OTA update. Does it break root, or cause any other problems on a rooted system or custom rom? Are there any advantages to allowing it to update?

Yes, it does break root but VRoot brings it back. I haven't had any problems with it, but I'm still using the stock ROM. As far as the extra hot spot option, doesn't seem to work for me. I get the impression it's an optional thing for service providers who provide hot spots for an extra charge. However, Virgin Mobile, for this phone anyway, doesn't seem to offer that service. On balance, I saw no tangible advantage to the update.

Thanks for sharing all of this information with the community.

I was having problems with this specific update, so I ditched it and went back to B04 (I think it also comes with the tether though, mine does) because it doesn't really add anything that I could see and as far as I know the tether is free/working once rooted (at least mine is)

Thanks for sharing your experience, djmixer36. It's good to know that I won't be missing anything by declining the update. For anybody that has as much trouble as I do finding what they're looking for when they really need it, when searching the forums, here is the link to the instructions to factory reset to stock B04.

Had to lol, I couldn't find anything myself when I googled a fix

I had the wifi tethering option as well with the Bo4 and Bo7 however neither would work. I had to root my phone and download a special app to allow the tethering to work for free. I could not root my phone on the Bo7 so I had to go back to stock Bo4 which is what I am currently on. I am thinking about going back to Bo7 though because rooting did something to my 3g and wifi where it is always grey now, never blue. It interferes with my internet accessibility sometimes. So, the root method you mentioned here works to root a Bo7? I would like to know also if there is anything I can do to fix the internet thing or if I should just update back to Bo7 and try this root method?

Not sure if you are referring to me or the OP, but I don't believe there is a way at all to root B07. My awe updated to B07 and afterwards I must have tried 6-7 different root applications (PC side or otherwise), so I can only assume the B07 update breaks rooting and it could be potentially messing up your tether since carriers can detect & block modded tethering. As for your internet, I would try reflashing the B04 update.zip.

I was talking about this root method. I am assuming this person was talking about the Bo7 when they mentioned "the latest software update"... but you are right in that there seems to be no method, with or without pc, that will root the Bo7 which is why I had to go back to stock rom. Enabling the wifi hotspot on the Bo4 and Bo7 did not work before root so the version did not matter, either one would not allow me to enable the hotspot which is why I rooted.
