Back up Programs for Replacemnt N1

My N1 developed a problem today with connecting for charging and syncing- looks like one of the prongs is messed up. I opted to get a refurb. replacement since it is still under warranty.

However, I want to know how to back up the programs and licenses that are not on my sd card but are stored in the phone and cannot be moved to sd card. Can any of these programs be stored on the card through an internal process without the sync to the pc? Suggestions?

Also, I was told that the replacement came just as it did from the factory and that I would get OTA updates (Gingerbread, etc). Did anyone else have that experience?

Thanks for your help with this one,
