background apps stops on screen lock

my internet related applications like the various zIMs and the downloader stops whenever i lock my screen, n resumes on unlocking the screen. i seems my internet connection is lost whenever i lock the screen.
plz help me out

If you are talking about WiFi, go to Settings > Wireless & networks > WiFi settings > Menu button > Advanced > WiFi sleep policy > Never or Never when charging.
