Apps that aren't currently running aren't checking for new data.
For example, unless Gmail is open I don't get notifications of new mail.
On my phone there is a setting to restrict/unrestrict background data, but I can't find this on my tablet.
I'm sure it's just a matter of a tick in a box - but where's the box?
