Root Backing up unrooted phone?

I read thread after thread about rooting and custom ROMs yesterday. I had my Legend for half a year but never got around to rooting or custom ROMs.

It seems there is no way to backup the phone ROM (or at least settings) before starting the rooting process?

I am on Froyo (unbranded) so it seems I have to wipe the phone completely in the rooting process...

I have backups of the contents of the SD card (and that includes regular export of my contacts, even though they should be synced with google), but not of anything on internal phone memory.

you're just going to have to grin and bare it I'm afraid, once you lose all of it, you forget what you had and it;s not that bad
