Help Backing Up Your Note 7 Before Exchange.

WeeWilly

Android Enthusiast
Those of us who will be exchanging our Note 7s over the next several weeks need to make sure our phones are backed up. I have no experience with Samsung Cloud Backup (it's new and exclusive to the Note 7) but, according to an article in C/NET, it backs up everything, including all apps and settings. Here's a report from the article's author who tested the backup and restore process:

"Unlike other backup services, Samsung Cloud will allow you to restore certain aspects of your device at any time. To test out the restore process, I created a backup of my home screen and installed apps, then deleted some app icons and installed apps.

"I then went into Settings > Cloud and accounts > Samsung Cloud > Restore and selected to restore just my home screen layout and installed apps. A few seconds later, an alert showed up letting me know the restore had completed successfully and sure enough, all of my apps were back in their rightful place. The apps I had deleted retained their previous logged in sessions and settings, speeding up the restore process even more."

Aren't you the lucky one?Verizon made sure we only got their measly backup cloud with 5gb of space. I will have to use other means to back up my apps and settings.

I don't understand why a carrier would replace a manufacturer's app with one that appears to be inferior (at least in terms of reducing backup storage from 15GB to 5GB).

I sent a VERY stern email to Samsung, essentially flaming them over this. Why would the world's largest smartphone manufacturer allow itself to be run roughshod over by a carrier? All Samsung needs to do is flex its muscle and tell Verizon "no, Samsung Cloud stays on the phone or you don't carry the Note 7." What's Verizon going to do, skip the Note 7 and lose that revenue? No way! Samsung's being a total weenie here, when they have the power to tell carriers how it's gonna be.

And I let them know it.

As far as backing up, I believe Smart Switch can backup to the PC... and then when we get the new less-flammable Note 7s, restore the backup to the phone. I haven't tried that yet, but that's my understanding.

Does anyone know if Samsung cloud has the option of backing up only the app data rather than the app file? Also can you backup invidual apps rather than the whole lot of apps on the device?

I just did a backup, everything backed up except my apps... Said it failed
I had the same problem. It got to about 75% backing up apps and then it failed. It looks as if the problem is caused by disabled apps and re-enabling any disabled app fixes the problem. See this thread on XDA Developers.

UPDATE: I enabled all apps and it worked!
APK files. app data, and app settings
Last backed up on 9/4/16 2:46 PM

Unless I am missing a setting somewhere there is no way to tell smart switch which apps data to include in the backup. My smart switch seems to exclude all the data for the play store apps.

I don't see an option to backup only app data. The Apps backup option backs up APK files. app data, and app settings. Also, I don't see any option to backup individual apps.

I haven't looked at Smart Switch because I'm not sure I'll have an opportunity to make a wireless transfer when I exchange my phone for a new one. It looks to me as if Samsung Cloud will allow me to mirror the contents of my current phone on the new Note 7.

Thanks to the posts in this thread on XDA Developers I was able to get Samsung Cloud working so that I should be able to mirror the contents of my current Note 7 to the new Note 7. I also purchased EZ Disabler which appears to be a very useful tool.

I was chatting with a verizon rep online, and I came away from the discussion with the impression that I can have a new one sent to me before sending my phone back. Rather than doing an exchange in store.

This will allow me to have both phones side by side to make sure I copy each setting exactly how I had/have it. Its still going to take a while which is a major PITA, but its better than having to hand in your phone, getting a new one and having no opportunity to transfer anything.

I wish I had Samsung Cloud from the looks of what Ive read here. But Smart Switch transfers all the important stuff. Ill just have to take some time recreating my Philadelphia Eagles theme, setting up my home screens, widgets, and a bunch of little stuff in nova launcher.

I got that impression direct from Samsung UK that if I went for their exchange programme I would be sent a phone put first to get updated on it and then return this one. I'm expecting a call within 7 days from the recall team to query this before I commit.

And the Verizon rep I spoke with told me that I had to go back to the location I "purchased" from even though it was technically ordered online as it was a pre-order and mailed to me. I really wish they'd get their stories straight.

No. Wrong. All you have to do is go to an actual Verizon store. I ordered online and my nearest Verizon store Is 36miles away so I have to go to it and exchange it their.

(For all I know you have already done this)
I like what you are doing but I think you should contact Verizon directly and complain first/too. Verizon are the ones that controlled what was added and removed, not Samsung (maybe Samsung could step in and have something to say but we don't know). Verizon are notorious for doing it, they are the biggest and "best" and feel that they can do whatever they want and get away with it.

I don't think Samsung are being run roughshod over at all and I don't think they are being a weenie. I think they don't care, and they don't really have to care. There probably was never any conversation about the Cloud application. I think that as of right now there is no check-back from the carriers to the manufacturers to see what they can and can't get away with.
If there was documentation out there that said specifically Samsung told Verizon to leave Samsung Cloud on the devices, Verizon didn't listen, and Samsung had nothing to say after it and did nothing about it. Then I would say that Samsung was being run over and being total weenies.

Once the money is in the manufacturers hands from the carriers and the devices are then released to the carriers, the carriers have basic freedom to do whatever they want. Same with software updates. We have to wait and wait and wait, for the carriers.

I wish there were better ways for consumers to get in touch with large corporations, or at least make sure their voice is heard. When companies started designing sealed mobile devices I wish there had been a way for us to rise up and put a stop to it (amongst other things). This whole Note 7 battery thing, is to me, one of the biggest reasons why we shouldn't have fully sealed phones. This whole thing could be easily fixed if the users were able to take the back cover off and SEE their battery. It would be easy to tell which battery is in the device and the device would not have to be recalled. THE BATTERY should be recalled, by manufacturer and part number/date code. Samsung could overnight corrected batteries to all affected users and have the bad batteries carefully shipped back. The user and manufacturer would both be much less inconvenienced.

I wish we consumers could get the carriers to stop their shenanigans and get clean low bloat software updates out faster. Or cut out the middle man and get updates right from the manufacturer.

You should ask Samsung to publish Samsung Cloud to the Play Store, so that any user can install it to their device and spite those carriers.

The old 'shortcut' trick might work. It has worked in the past to give branded phones access to some Android (Vanilla) options and settings, or other settings that are installed on the device but 'disabled' by an evil manufacturer or carrier.
Sounds like Samsung Cloud is about 80% functional on a stock Verizon Note 7 handset - no gallery back up

I wish T-Mobile would follow that process but somehow I got the idea that I would have to take the phone to the nearest T-Mobile store, even though I pre-ordered the phone online.

Pyro, you are the hero of the DAY for posting that! I just created the activity shortcut, opened Samsung Cloud, and there it is... 15GB of storage! On a Verizon Note 7! AWESOME!!!

:)

I'm sorry but one more time for us slower folks...what did you do?

edit: never mind. I'm slow but I get there!

BTW, you can find Samsung Cloud and create the activity using ADW 2.0 too. Just offering an alternative. :)

Every time I run a backup I get this network error, but everything shows it's synced.
