Root Backing up your phone?

Yes... I am a Noob. With that being said, what is the point (process) of backing up your phone before you flash? when you flash, having a clean slate is the idea, data corruption if the main reason for failure? Right? Going to root and flash for the first time and just want to understand what I an getting into here. Thoughts and comments would be appreciated

The point is that you dont want to lose any applications you may have installed to the phone, and also some ROM's wipe the phone so you would lose any data like music and what not that you have saved to memory. So when you back up you're saving yourself the headache of having to install and re add everything you once had. There are several programs that will do this, however I personally have found Titanium Backup to be the best, you can find it on the Market. There are 2 version a paid version and free version, the free version is a pain because its not as fast and when you restore you have to ok everything it restores so the restore process can take some time if you're restoring quite a few things. The paid version is so much easier and is totally worth buying, it pays for itself just by saving the headaches of having to download everything all over again.

Thanks for the info. so, the wipe is for the rom, kernel, etc. no worries about any corrupt data from the apps causing problems? Hate to be so uneducated about the process... Again, thanks for the quick response!

It depends on which backup you are talking about. Yes, using either Ti Backup or MyBackup Pro (or Root) will do exactly what is discussed above.

The nandroid backup done in the custom recovery is done in order to have a working version of your phone in case of something going wrong in your flashing process (i.e boot loops, unstable/unusuable phone, etc).
