Help Backing up

Hi All

After wrestling with the abomination than is Nokia PC Suite (takes an age to load, Bluetooth exchange is slower than paint drying, tendency to frequently crash etc) how is backing up the Motorola Milestone 2 via bluetooth etc? Any issues?
 
Bluetooth is Bluetooth, changing to another phone won't make it go any faster :-(

My advice: USB or wi-fi, depending on what you mean by "backup".
 
There is no need to back it up like you did with Nokia. Everything is backed up over the air. Calendar, contacts whatever else you might want.

BTW, I will move this thread to Milestone 2 section since it seems you are planning to buy the Milestone 2 not 1.

John, I just tested the speed of the Bluetooth and it took 4 seconds to upload a 64kb jpg file. How can that be?! :(

Szadzik, what do you mean by "backed up over the air"? I want to backup all files on my phone onto my laptop. I don't want to move my content into the corporate cloud.

Pointless to buy Android if you do not want to use the cloud IMO.

If you want to back up anything just connect the phone using USB and back it up or root the phone and use nandroid backup that will back up the whole system.

re: the Cloud. Are there limitations in Android that force subscription to the Cloud ?? (Don't understand what storage location to do with the device.)

re: backup:- I want to find out how much control the user is granted by the manufacturer/Android over what I back up, when, how, and where?
(eg checkout GFI backup for an instance of a system that allows almost total flexibility and control of backing up/file transfer - for PCs)

For instance:-

  • Does Android allow, single files to be sent easily to other devices (e.g. PC) other than via email etc etc? (I assume this is easy?)
  • Does it allow 'multi-way' file backups i.e. for handheld to overwrite PC, or to synchronise both, or synchronise new only, or for the PC to overwrite hendheld, etc etc.

Do not worry about these things, Android is an open OS and whatever you choose to do you will be able to do. Some things may require root accesss but at this point it only requires 5 minutes of work and no expertise to do that with apps like Universal Androot.

As for the sync questions, if they are about file sync, you can do whatever you want. Android itself does not have tools to do that, but you can mount the phone as storage and use Windows tools to do the sync.

Forget about how Nokia did things with PC Suite as there is no need for such apps in Android.

Why is there no need if Android is 'Linux' and I'm using M$XP on my laptop - ok maybe this is the push to install Linux on my laptop too, but ... one step one step.

What do you need Linux for? You will see how easy it all is as soon as you get the phone. If you are even a bit techy and know how to search Google, you will be perfectly fine :)
