Help Backlight Stays on after Calendar Reminder

When I receive calendar appointment reminders my backlight comes on and stays on until I select the "dismiss all" or turn off the phone. My backlight settings are set for it to turn off after 1 minute but it stays on much longer, I have seen it stay on for 30 minutes or more. Sometimes I do not hear the reminder but later notice it because of the heat coming from the phone because of the backlight being on for a long period of time. I am thinking about turning off the sync with my corporate calendar but wanted to ask if there is some simple way to stop it from doing this.
