backup confusion

So you'd think in this day and age backing up your cell phone would be automatic and simple. Well, I needed to reset my S7 edge and lost all my memos. Since "automatic restore" was enabled i assumed my data (including memos) were backed up. Big mistake. What exactly do I need to do to ensure all the data on my phone is backed up?? Can anyone explain what the "automatic restore" option does because evidently it did not "restore" my data.

Thanks

"automatic restore" sounds like a Samsung specific feature, probably cloud. Did you create a Samsung "S" account when first got the phone?

Google also have an option to back up data to their servers and restore it. I can't tell you how good it is though as I've never used it or S-Notes.

Being rooted I have access to pretty comprehensive backup tools and prefer to trust myself rather than come corporate cloud. There are apps for backup of app data without root, such as Helium, but I've only used that once, several years ago. And there are dedicated backup apps for some kinds of data such as SMS. I always make sure I have at least one backup of anything important, and don't mind using more than one tools for redundancy, but as noted my main tools require root.
