i no i should no this allready. but i really havent bothered to deal with it when i really should have. i see alot of posts to do a back up. and i can understand why. so i do a backup every time i change or add anything new. but im not exactly sure what im backing up. is it phone settings? data? apps? now heres my question. when would i use these backups? and how? i have allway just redone all my settings and added my apps back on phone manually. it there an easier way? after i flash a new rom can i just restore all settings, apps, and data in some way? i always do a backup in clockwork mod, in TB, and as well as copy my sd card to my pc. i just drag the C-drive to my desktop. not sure if that the right way to do it, but thats why im asking.

Data, Apps, Settings, Kernel, the works.
now heres my question. when would i use these backups? and how?
when-if you make a change that has undesirable effects and dont know how/cant manualy fix it yourself
how- by booting into cwm and selecting restore in the backup and restore menu.
note: do not rename backups as it will cause a md5 sum mismatch and the restore will not work

you can do an advanced restore of /data, in cwm, in backup and restore>advanced restore to get your apps back as long as you are not using hroarks new solution to internal storage. ( in that case, you would restore sd-ext, provided that the backed up ROM was also using this solution)
note: i believe this will cause problems when switching roms, (bootloop?) but dont quote me on that, lol

thanks. i like the way you intertwine my questions with your answers. tried to use CMW to restore but it didnt work. now no why. i changed the name. but the newest one i didnt i just draged the C-drive to desktop. is that the right way to do it? also when i look on the card i can see the backup did in TB. is that what ill use to restore? or is the one through CWM called comething i dont recognize and thats the one to use or restore? i was changeing roms earlier and something went wrong and it boot looped. so i used odin. rerooted, along with new CWM and reflashed honeybread. so my backup wouldnt be on the new CWM. but it would be on my desktop backup. i just dont no what to look for or how to find it.

also the hroark internal memery thing your refering to... would that be the koumekernel 1.2? i was thinking bout installing it. but mayb all wait till i read some more

not sure what you mean by 'drag the c drive onto desktop'. the backup is stored on your sd card in a folder called clockworkmod (but you said you renamed a backup, so you must have known that)
i do not/have not ever used TB (free or pro) i use root uninstaller (very similar) so i wont be any help with that.
inside the backup (which will have a name consisting of a bunch of numbers <i.e 2011-12-30.03.04.23>) will contain 4 .tar files (Cache, Data, System, Sd-ext) these are the partitions of your phone. when you restore the backup, these files are unpacked and placed in the correct places. Data contains your app and such, thats why restoring it in the advanced restore menu will bring your apps back.

oh, and yes kk1.2 has hroarks memory mod

when i plug my phone into PC i click C-drivea removable f) and that brings up my card info. but i just found out that even though i copied it to desktop it wont let me look at it after my phone is unpluged. that is what i did before when i renamed(removeable f) it just said it didnt exist. so ill just have to get all apps from market again. learn for the next time. i now see the file you are talking about on cwm for the restore thanks for the info.
