Backup in full before ROM flashing

Hello guys.
It's me yet again seeking wisdom and advice.
What's the best way to backup all of my android so that when I wipe and flash a ROM I can restore it to as close as it was before as possible?
I ask because some of you switch roms often, while I seldomly dare to wipe because that means spending several hours restoring my apps, data, config for each app, phone and system settings and homescreens to they were before.

You need to create a Nandroid backup in your custom recovery. Which phone are you using?

I'm using a Galaxy Nexus.
To the best of my knowledge, nandroid backups restore EVERYTHING, and therefore will also restore the ROM I flashed out of. What I need is something that will copy everything from my current ROM to a new one, if that makes sense.

Ah, so it sounds like you want to backup and restore all data to the new one. Generally, when moving to a new ROM, you want to wipe all data/cache. One of the methods of backing up and restoring that data is to use Titanium Backup. I'm not overly familiar with the app since I don't use it, but most who do love it for that very reason.
