Backup up Android

bonne

Newbie
Being new to Android with my first device Nexus 7, I am having a quite silly question, I guess.

Couldn't use my Nexus 7 without registering it to my Google Account which I then did.

Now I see that the Nexus is backing itself up to the cloud. What is being backed up and where to exactly?

I am using OpenVPN to connect to different networks, and I am wondering if my certificates ends up somewhere in the cloud where I don't want them.

Another question... if I later want to restore from a backup... how do I do then?

Thx..., Lars (Android newbie)

Hi Lars, and welcome to AF :)

There are a number of things it might be syncing. Look in the Accounts and Sync menu (I use Gingerbread, so am guessing that key menus will be similar in JB) and see what syncing is enabled (Contacts, Calendar). The Privacy menu probably has a setting for backing up your data and settings to Google's servers - I turn that off, but if it is set it will be backing up rather more information.

The only thing I've restored from cloud backups are contacts and calendar entries, where after wiping my device these restore over the air automatically.

Hi Lars, and welcome to AF :)

Hi - and thank you... wow what a quick reply!

Well, in "settings", I can only find a "backup and restore" menu. In here, there are these options:

---
Backup my data (which I disabled after discovering it to be running)
Backup account
Automatic restore

Factory data reset
---

Under backup my data, it says: "Back up app data, Wi-Fi passwords, and other settings to Google servers.

What are the "other settings", and if data that I do not want up there at google has been synced - how do I delete them from there?

Regards, Lars.

I don't know what other data it backs up. But on mine if I turn that option off it asks me to confirm, telling me that doing so will erase the data from the Google servers. So I think the deletion should be automatic.
